Rehearsing with the Austin Symphony for this year’s Fourth of July concert. Gotta love that John Williams. It’s a blast to play.

The soundtrack for those movies is incredible.

Those scores, along with some of Elfman’s, are the best.

It's one thing to listen to them, quite another to sit in the orchestra and play them. Such good writing, such powerful music. Brilliant stuff.

I had been playing for a couple of years when my dad bought me the soundtrack to Star Wars (LP, of course, two disks). I listened to the final battle music over and over. It blew me away, and still does.

A long time ago, I got to play part of Haydn 1 (mvmt 3) on the piano with the University of MD orchestra. But they’d had enough rehearsal, and wanted to go home. Still, sitting at a Steinway D and hearing the orchestra part that close up - was magical.

LP for which. EP IV? I have that as well. And on CD.

Did you remember reading material or will you be too busy on this one?

I used to have the soundtrack tapes for Star Trek “The Motion Picture” and Star Wars back in High School. I played those to death in the car.

Too busy, thankfully. I get payed whether I play or not, but I'd rather play.

Yeah, E4. Except it wasn't E4 back then.

It’s just the easiest way to refer to it now.

You really feel it. And Williams’ brass writing is just fantastic, especially the scoring.

Right on! Busy is better.

I can play a piece in my head, pitch perfect. My first piano teacher (total of 8 years) can play it in her head AND WRITE IT DOWN. All the parts. Even the goddamn timpani. If only I were so gifted.

I know. But I'm still a purist.

Alas, I can’t play anything by ear. I need the notes in front of me.

In contrast, my sight reading sucks, but if I listen to, say, Glenn Gould or Martha Argerich play something, I can nail it, more or less.
